Blue Tangerine first sprouted in the winter of 2004 in Lansing Michigan. It is rooted in a friendship between two women who share the same love for all things old. We would often talk of the absurdity in buying anything new when one can find the most unique and beautiful of treasures at antique shops, thrift stores and flea markets. We’re the kind of girls who would rather listen to music on vinyl, travel by way of vintage Schwinn and buy boots already perfectly worn in. We also share a deep appreciation for anything handmade and have both for many years enjoyed quenching our creative thirsts by crafting objects, jewelry and clothing which are often of a vintage design.

It wasn’t until we met one Tuesday night at the local watering hole for a pitcher and some good conversation that the idea of making jewelry together peeked its little head above ground. We had each made a necklace out of old brooches and chain and the two of them were undeniably sisters. We were shocked at their similarity. It was clear then that we, as designers and otherwise, were two of a rare and strange cultivar. These pieces were peculiarly original, and to us, completely beautiful. We were so excited! So we began making jewelry together, all the while amazed at the likeness in out tastes and vision. We have had a delightful time making these pieces together. It has brought a great deal of joy and fulfillment to us both.

Blue Tangerine Designs aims to provide unique jewelry and accessories for fashion, environmental and socially conscious women. Our products are handcrafted from found and vintage/antique items. We harvest parts from old jewelry, hardware, textiles and natural materials to make artful accessories, which contain very few (if any) newly purchased elements. Each piece is an individual. Some take themselves quite seriously; others have a certain sense of humor and awareness of their own quirks and kitsch. We find each one beautiful and a work of art. We believe that the loveliest of things (and people) possess visible imperfections. Our pieces are typically asymmetrical and wear their age with grace and dignity.

Our pieces are historical-hybrids, with combined elements from a variety of eras and locations. We believe that old things tell a story. Each element, like a little anecdotal memory, carries with it something of the life and time in which it was originally used or worn. In creating these yummy little junk-poems we are performing tiny marriages of the past and present. To us they are a delight to make and a joy to wear. We hope you will agree!
